title: The Negotiation Table description: The physical table isn’t neutral.

THE NEGOTIATION TABLE

Even the chairs matter.

THE ROOM IS PART OF THE NEGOTIATION

Everyone has biases.

Even physical positioning can influence how a negotiation feels.

Sitting directly opposite someone can create a subtle feeling of confrontation.

A more comfortable arrangement can make cooperation easier.

It sounds insignificant.

But that’s exactly the point.

Negotiation happens between people, not perfectly rational machines.

THE NEGOTIATOR’S DILEMMA

I need to balance two things.

ASSERTION

I need to know:

  • what I want
  • what my limits are
  • what my arguments are
  • what I am willing to defend

COOPERATION

But I also need to remain someone the other side can work with.

I need:

  • listening
  • patience
  • attention
  • flexibility

Too much aggression can destroy the relationship.

Too much accommodation can destroy the deal.

THE QUESTION

The goal isn’t simply:

“How do I win?”

It is:

How do I defend my interests while remaining someone they want to make a deal with?

REMEMBER

The table isn’t neutral.

The physical and psychological environment can influence the negotiation.
