title: Salary Negotiation description: The negotiation starts before accepting the job.

SALARY NEGOTIATION

Don’t negotiate after you’ve accepted.

BEFORE ACCEPTING

The same principles apply to salary negotiation.

Prepare:

  • market benchmarks
  • accomplishments
  • measurable results
  • responsibilities
  • documentation
  • alternatives

Don’t just say:

“I deserve more.”

Build the case.

FIRM ON WHAT. FLEXIBLE ON HOW.

Maybe the company cannot increase the salary.

That doesn’t mean there is nothing else to negotiate.

Possible variables:

  • salary
  • bonus
  • title
  • responsibilities
  • remote work
  • vacation
  • training
  • review date
  • future salary adjustment

REVIEW CLAUSE

If something cannot be agreed today, move the negotiation into the future.

For example:

“If I reach X objectives within six months, we review the compensation.”

This creates another negotiation point.

DON’T DESTROY THE RELATIONSHIP

I don’t want to “win” the salary negotiation and start the job with a damaged relationship.

The objective is:

Better deal + good relationship.

REMEMBER

Don’t negotiate only the number. Negotiate the package.
